La terza edizione del Festival si è svolta dal 25 al 27 luglio 2023 presso l’arena ExpostModerno (Via Napoli 264, Bari), nell’ambito della rassegna “Festa del Cinema in Libertà” organizzata dall’Armata Brancaleone A.P.S.

𝐈𝐭: La giuria ne ha riconosciuto il valore per lo sguardo giocoso e divertito, per la libertà compositiva e lo slancio surreale costruito sulla continua trasformazione delle figure in immagini sempre nuove che grazie all’animazione rivelano un carattere narrativo libero, ironico e grottesco. L’uso sottile, sorprendente e mai didascalico dei suoni collegato alle immagini animate riescono a suggerire al racconto significati nuovi, nascosti e paradossali generando sempre stupore e meraviglia.
𝐄𝐧: The jury thoroughly appreciated the fun and playful approach, the freedom of composition and the surreal impetus built upon the continuous transformation of the images in something new which, thanks to the animation, can reveal a narrative that can roam free, while being ironical and grotesque. The subtle use of sound, which is surprising and never didascalic, combined with animated images manages to suggest new, hidden and paradoxical meanings, generating a sense of wonder and marvel.

𝐈𝐭: Questo ambizioso e ammirevole lavoro di cinque studenti della MoPA, scuola francese di cinema d’animazione 3D, ci ha sorpreso per la felice contaminazione tra stili differenti, per il fascino orientaleggiante dei suoi personaggi e per la maniera con cui racconta, in chiave poetica e immaginifica, l’inadeguatezza dell’essere umano davanti agli sconvolgimenti di un mondo indifferente alle logiche del profitto, della contrattazione commerciale e della burocrazia. La spigolosità poligonale del “negoziatore”, figura difforme rispetto allo scenario in cui si muove, si contrappone efficacemente ai modelli più gentili e meno respingenti dei due bambini, Luna e Sole, tutt’uno, anche visivamente, con l’ambiente e la natura di cui fanno parte.
𝐄𝐧: This ambitious and admirable work from five students at MoPA, a French 3D animation school, surprised us with its pleasant mix of different styles, with the eastern-inspired charm of its characters and with the poetic and imaginative way it describes the inadequacy of human beings when faced with a world unphased by the obsession of profit, commerce and burocracy. The polygonal sharpess of the negotiator, who is very different from the context in which it operates, is clearly opposed to the models used for the two children, Sun and Moon, who have a more gentle and less aggressive appeareance and are one with the nature they belong to.

𝐈𝐭: Una scrittura originale supportata da un eccellente ritmo narrativo, cui si aggiunge un ottimo impianto di messa in scena sorretto da un cast di attori molto bravi ed ispirati. Raccontare il dramma della solitudine e dell’isolamento durante la terza età, usando le corde della dark comedy, rompe quel muro di retorica di cui è spesso infarcito il racconto di questo periodo storico e rafforza il concetto di come l’ironia e la creatività possano essere un antidoto quando la vita diventa impegnativa. È proprio il caso di dire, citando Bakunin:”Una risata vi seppellirà!”
𝐄𝐧: The jury found the plot original and supported by an excellent narrative rhythm, together with a superb direction and a cast of very good and inspired actors. The short film tells the drama of loneliness and isolation during old age, using the strings of dark comedy, shattering the layers of rhetoric that filmmakers often employ to describe the current historical period and its dynamics. It reinforces the concept of how irony and creativity can be an antidote when life becomes hard. It is appropriate to say, quoting Bakunin: “A laugh will bury you!”

𝐈𝐭: Abbiamo deciso di premiare un racconto esuberante e schizofrenico dove siamo continuamente sballottati tra il mondo per come lo conosciamo e ciò che si “nasconde” dietro. Un suono incessante sveglia nel cuore della notte una coppia, come in un dramma di Harold Pinter. Improvvisamente siamo catapultati in una storia ai confini della realtà dove gli attori, bravissimi e grotteschi (quasi come fantasmi appunto), insieme ad una sapiente regia, sostengono un ritmo di suspense e tensione con perfetti tempi comici. Grazie ad un mix entusiasmante di generi cinematografici che spaziano dall’ horror, al cinema di Landis, alla comicità slapstick, vince il premio Mezione d’onore di Cortocircuiti Short Film Festival il cortometraggio Bleep di Ben S. Hyland. Una storia divertente e surreale in grado di smitizzare le nostre paure più recondite e infantili.
𝐄𝐧: We have decided to reward an exuberant, almost schizophrenic tale which continually tosses us back and forth between the world as we know it and what is “hiding” behind it.
A relentless sound wakes up a couple in the middle of the night, like in a drama by Harold Pinter. Suddenly we find ourselves at the edge of reality where the talented actors, grotesque like ghosts, guided by a skillful direction, create a rhythmic suspense and tension with perfect comedic timing.
Thanks to an exciting mix of film genres ranging from horror, to the cinema of Landis, to slapstick comedy, the film Bleep by Ben S. Hyland wins the Mezione d’onore award at the Cortocircuiti Short Film Festival. A fun and surreal story that helps us demystify our innermost and childish fears.

𝐈𝐭: La mancanza della capacità di visualizzare o di richiamare nella propria mente immagini, parole, suoni e sapori è una patologia che colpisce solo il 3% della popolazione mondiale. La scelta di un giovane filmmaker di restituire il racconto di un disturbo che ti priva dei racconti, attraverso un collage di ricordi personali assenti dalla memoria, sottolinea l’importanza che può assumere linguaggio audiovisivo a livello terapeutico, al di là del mero intrattenimento. Metacinema etico e funzionale.
𝐄𝐧: The lack of the ability to visualize or remember pictures, words, sounds and smells affects only 3% of the world population. The choice of a young filmmaker to describe the life of someone suffering from a disorder that deprives you of anecdotes from your life, employing a collage of personal memories which are, in fact, not part of the main character’s memory anymore, stresses the therapeutic importance that audiovisual language can have, other than being pure entertainment. This is an excellent example of ethical and functional metacinema.
